“Learn Listen Play” is wonderful. The children and staff love the program. It offers children the opportunity to learn about and develop an appreciation for the various types of music and instruments. This is not musical entertainment but “music education” that is offered in a fun and engaging way.

About Us

Learn Listen Play Co. provides quality music and creative arts education to children across the Mid-Atlantic. We travel to your location and perform music education sessions at a very affordable price.  Our mobile programs, or "Play Patrols," are very diverse and include: drum circles, Latin percussion, Jazz for Kids, guitar sing-along, world instruments, and parades.  Best of all, we provide all of the instruments and materials for the session.  At LLP, we try to have a different and creative approach to music and creative arts education using the best practices in early childhood education.  We are also available for birthday parties and other events.

We work with every client to customize an experience that is right for you.  We can provide your school or day care center with weekly, bi-weekly programming, or a one time session to supplement your existing educational programming.  We can perform multiple sessions a day if you have a diverse age group at your school/center.  It is entirely up to you.  Our mission is to introduce children to the world of music and creative arts, and we work with you and your budget to ensure that happens.

Learn, Listen, Play - Mobile Music Education Method

At Learn Listen Play Co.™, we strongly believe in the power of music. Francis Coates III has been developing a method for teaching music to children for many years now. This is the method we use while teaching in schools and other education institutions. We call it the Learn Listen Play™ learning model.

Learn: First, we explain what we will do in the session. Each session has a primary instrument that we learn about. We spend a few minutes talking about the origins of the instrument and its use. For Example: During the Djembe Class, we discuss its West African origins and we talk about why it is important to the culture. We also describe how to play the instrument and the difference between the Djembe, and similar looking drums the children may have seen or learned about in the past.

Listen:
After explaining the origins of the instrument, the instructor will play the instrument for the children. As the instructor plays, he/she will reference things that were explained earlier in the session. For Example: The djembe drum makes a high, and low tone depending on where you play it. The instructor will ask the children where to hit the drum to produce these tones. During this part of the session, the instructor(s) will teach the children a song to sing as the instructor plays the drum. We also introduce various music terminologies like tempo, beat, and rhythm.

Play:
All of this leads up to the children being able to play instruments that we distribute during the session. What better way to test if the children understand the lesson by giving them the opportunity to play an instrument and have fun. Every session, we pass out instruments that are related to the subject of the day. For example: During our djembe class, children play various hand drums, mini djembes made by Mino, and tambourines. For our Latin program, children play maracas, shakers, tambourines, cow-bells, and mini timbales. The children will also get a chance to play the professional instrument the instructor used during the session. Before the session is over, we always incorporate music and movement. Most sessions will end in a dance circle. The children form a circle facing each other. The instructor will play the instrument and each child will get a chance to get in the center of the circle and show off their dance moves. All of our programs are designed to be interactive, informative, and fun.
